Do you know where the expression "dog days of summer" comes from?

Dog days refers to the hottest period in the summer, usually between July 3 to Aug 11 when Sirius, the dog star, is in conjunction with the sun. That means for a brief time Sirius rises and sets with our sun. But why is it called 'dog days'? Well, ancient Egyptians named the star Sirius after their god Osirus, who appeared in their art with the head of a dog, hence the nickname 'dog star.' The ancient Egyptians and Romans believed that Sirius was responsible for the extra heat during those weeks and called them the "dog days" after the offending star. Astronomers today know that the added heat Sirius gives is minuscule and that the extra summer heat comes from the tilt of the earth.

On a sadder note, our hearts go out to those and their families injured or lost in the Indiana State Fair stage collapse. Spoilers: It's hot outside

Tuesday was the first day of summer and the longest day in the year. I think some parts of the country would argue that summer started when the rain quit and temperatures hit, and stayed, above 100 degrees. We're slated for rain here in Atlanta until the middle of next week, and I wish I could give a day or two of it to the southwest to quench those wildfires.

Our Father's Day Sale just ended and we hope all the Dads out there enjoyed their special day. Our next sale is Independence Day, July4th! The drought is preventing many state funded fireworks displays, and banning personal use and sales. That means out door grilling may be off limits as well. One stray spark could devastate a whole neighborhood, so be safe out there this 4th.

If you're a mom, we hope you had a happy and relaxing Mother's Day. May is just flying by and Memorial Day will be here before you know it, followed by Father's Day, and the 4th of July. Going Global

Lets talk about globalization for a moment. No, I'm not going to rant at you about politics, there are enough people in that business already. I'm talking about globalization in your interior design. What does that mean?
Simple, the same way people talk about becoming a global business, or a world wide company, globalization for interior design means bringing a little of the world wide into your home. This isn't a new concept, of course. For centuries, explorers returned home with a native culture's style which was adapted into the latest craze. Blue and white is a prime example. Marco Polo brought the first major influential taste of Asia back to Europe where it exploded into every facet of European design. The most recognizable being the blue and white printed scenes or designs on fine china dishes. Incorporating foreign flare is less a trend and more a habit we as human beings are loath to part with. We love to see and share what other people are doing, and bring a little home with us.

You don't have to be a globe trotter to bring a little worldly culture into your home. With the continuing advances in technology, our world is figuratively shrinking, and that which was once exotic and unattainable is now as easy to bring home as the groceries. Fabrics, colors, and patterns from Morocco, India, and China are a great way to make your home feel a little more eclectic without throwing a lion skin rug down in the living room. If you are travel savvy and wondering what to do with all that colorful fabric you impulse bought in Thailand, why not make pillows or a table runner. Lanterns are an excellent bridge between style and function as candle holders for indoor and outdoor spaces, and Morocco, India, and China have more than enough lantern styles to choose from. Changing out the hardware, like light fixtures, inside and out, can change the feel of your home without breaking the bank. For something more subtle, try changing out the cabinet handles, drawer pulls, and door knobs.

Remember, a trend is just a trend, buy into it only if it is something that makes you feel comfortable.

Old is new again. This is not a new trend, but a common psychological shift during recession periods. We look for comfort in classical designs and motifs reminiscent of lasting stability during times of financial insecurity. Our design choices are driven less by a want for innovative newness and more by an economy that has made us question what we need. More than ever, design is not simply about style, but functionality.

Obviously choosing eco-friendly products is a big part of the new functionality, but so is re-purposing. Vintage is not only a trend but a great way to reclaim the natural beauty of found objects. Markets and yard sales are veritable treasure troves for great vintage finds. Instead of buying mass-produced art prints, why not start a collection of artwork and photography from your local flea markets and vintage stores. Revitalize old wood furniture by sanding and re-staining for a new look and feel. Sure its a big task, but doing things yourself makes the end result all the more uniquely you.

Animal motifs are another big trend in interiors as part of the desire for more natural decor elements. Zebra, leopard, giraffe, and other exotic animal prints are coming out of the accents category and into the main prints. If these exotic prints are too much, the rustic feel they provide can be attained through design elements figuring local wildlife. Faux sheepskin and deer antlers will add a rustic elegance to a room without the bold colors and patterns. Birds, owls in particular, are gracing all sorts of items from book ends to tea service sets and rabbits will be big this year because its the year of the rabbit. Animal themes can add playful whimsy to a home and lighten the mood of rooms dominated by neutral tones.

Spring Cleaning

Okay everybody, its time to pack away all of those lingering winter holiday decorations and make way for spring. This is the first official week of spring after all, and nothing welcomes the change of season better than cleaning house.

Vacuum under those sofa cushions, wipe that mountain of dust off your ceiling fan blades, and open the windows to let some fresh air in. A clean house is a great mood lifter and perfect canvas for a little spring decoration. Re-arranging your furniture is the cheapest way to reinvent your living space, but if you're looking for something less physically taxing, changing out your sofa pillows and throws is an easy way to change the mood of a room. Adding fresh cut flowers, or the plastic kind if you're allergic, can make a big difference on a coffee table, dining table, sideboard, or bookcase. Switching out your rugs is also a quick fix, and I don't need to tell you that we have an excellent selection of machine washable rugs to choose from for that extra little splash of color. Florals, stripes, and geometric patterns are trending this year in rugs.

One of the big design themes for this year is balance, reconnecting with the elements that make us feel at home and blending the old, the new, the modern, and the hi-tech. This means, elements with a personal touch, soft natural materials like wool and linen, and natural colors and prints like wood and tree and leaf. That doesn't mean color is out, it just means neutrals will play a bigger part in making the accent colors pop in the overall look. Neutrals are no longer just gray and beige, but gray purples and rich chocolate browns. Honeysuckle and coral are proposed to be very big this season along side fresh true greens like lettuce.

The most important thing to do when redecorating is to not loose sight of the elements that make you feel at home. It is your home after all, and even bigger than the color and pattern trends is the idea that your home be comfortable and uniquely you.

Easter isn't until April, right?

I saw Cadbury Creme Eggs in the Kroger the other day and it gave me pause. For a moment I thought maybe I'd entered some wayward time jump and bypassed February and March entirely, but the shelves were still overstocked with Valentines candies and my phone was still convinced it was January. Once again, I determined that I wasn't loosing my mind and that Easter was just taking a cue from Christmas, encroaching upon its proceeding holiday brethren.

But why? Easter is arguably just as big a candy holiday as Valentines, why would it need to start early? And who mandates the display? Is it the candy company or the individual grocery store? Holiday merchandise always ships early to its distributors so when the appropriate dates roll around, everything is available and trotted out for its seasonal debut. I work part time as a barista and "Christmas" auto-ships to us at the beginning of November and is always a chore to make space for in our cramped little stock room. Could it be that Cadbury has sent so much Easter merchandise to the Kroger that they simply don't have enough storage space to contain the Valentines surplus and the incoming Easter stock? Possible.

My winning theory is that the Kroger is capitalizing on all the people who've been jonesing for Cadbury Creme eggs since last Easter. People like me, who have an unhealthy love obsession with the Cadbury Creme egg and have trouble walking past the display boxes without reaching for them by the handful. Some of you cringe at the thought of these eggs and part of me is intensely jealous of your disgust. Valentines candy is great and all, but it and the holiday come loaded with social and emotional baggage. Easter carries only fond memories of dying myself instead of the eggs and wondering why a bunny would compulsively hide candy laden plastic eggs in my backyard every year. And naturally, eating myself sick, a repetitive experience I always regret but have yet to learn from.

For the sake of my sanity and my waistline, I wish that holiday candy would stay limited to the month in which its respective holiday occurred. My wish will go unanswered I know, but I can't be the only person that feels this way. What do you think of Cadbury eggs? And do you also wish that holiday merchandising was limited to its month of occurrence?

This is a view of the sky line from my neighborhood in Midtown, Atlanta on the first day of the storm. The first day is always the most exciting because the city shuts down and we all go sledding. Its one of the many advantages to living in the south where the states are ill equipped in both man and machine power to deal with inclement winter weather. Its the rest of the week following when we're all stir crazy and clamoring to return to work that the lack of man and machine power to deal with the leavings of the inclement weather rears its ugly head to laugh mockingly at us.

Our troubles began when it stopped snowing and started sleeting in the middle of that first day, Monday. The overnight low in the teens buried all the snow in an icy crust, which persisted and hardened the following night. Wednesday morning, neither I nor my roommate, nor anyone else were heavy enough to break through the frozen crust without the aide of a shovel. All the slush churned up on the sidewalks in the previous days had frozen into an ice slick. Our section of the neighborhood is terraced down a hill with most of the off-street parking down behind the houses in narrow alleys that all run downhill. A few of my neighbors at the bottom of the hill tried valiantly to make it to the top but ended up like many others, stuck, spinning their wheels on ice. The main street connecting to the off-street parking is also a hill, which is concealed mostly by trees. So even when the temperature rose out of freezing and the sun came out later in the week, our street remained largely icy.

I was parked out on the main street but in the most shaded portion of it, ironically at the top of the hill. I had to chisel through at least four inches of ice to find my car Friday morning. The street was still solid ice all around my car but was melted farther down and if I could just get my car down the hill to the unfrozen portion, I could leave the neighborhood! My plan sounds simple in theory but proved terrifying in execution. Once I left the safety of my parking hole, I immediately began sliding sideways and backwards. I spun my wheels for awhile trying to find some sort of grip, but there was nothing. So I used the sliding to my advantage and slid backwards into an available parking hole farther down the other side of the hill and called it quits. I'd spent most of the week bravely picking my way on foot taking the dog out and going to the store for food and boredom relief and that would just have to do until the temperature rose high enough to melt my shady street.

There were a few moments in my walking adventures down to the store where I literally almost busted my butt or would've knocked my teeth out if I hadn't regained balance by grabbing a nearby tree branch, fence, car, garbage can, sign post, fire hydrant, bag of leaves...etc. If I'd taken the lid to our recycling bin and used it to sled down the sidewalk I think my progress would've been faster and maybe even safer. But c'est la vie. Sunday is the first day I drove anywhere all week and the roads were pretty much clear. Its for the best that I didn't try harder to go anywhere by car earlier in the week. I was raised in the south and freely admit that I lack the moxie to drive on ice, so staying off the roads spared me from becoming part of the 2011 snow day accident statistic and spared all the other drivers on the roads from wondering if I actually knew what I was doing or if I was just pretending.

I spent my inclement weather week off reading Dune by Frank Herbert. What did you do?

Happy New Year!

A little late, I know, but I was home for the holidays and have just returned. I like so many others flying over the past weeks endured a canceled flight trying to make it home in time for Christmas. I was re-routed from Atlanta up to Minneapolis instead of enjoying a direct flight from Atlanta to Texas. Running through the Minneapolis airport to make my connecting flight and then arriving in Texas almost an hour early were the high points of my Holiday travel adventure. My return flight, also direct from Texas to Atlanta, was thankfully not canceled because I like almost everyone else I know have contracted something really icky in my sinuses and in my ears and couldn't have stood for more than two hours of air travel time. I am in fact writing this post with tissues stuffed up my nose to curb the perpetual and unsightly dripping. I thank my lucky stars I didn't contract stomach flu like my close friend and her husband did...

If you are also beginning 2011 with a nasty cold or stomach flu, I empathize completely and raise my vitamin loaded orange juice to us all for a swift recovery. My resolution for this year was to be more healthy, the irony of being so sick right now is a little hilarious. I consider myself pretty healthy, but I was going to work harder on amending my addiction to sugar. Sugar adds many of the hidden and unnecessary calories in my diet and all those baked goods I love so much are full of other things that make my cholesterol numbers horrible. The good part about being sick is that I can't taste anything and have an insatiable craving for salty chicken broth, so in terms of my resolution I'm on the right path, mostly.

If your resolution was also to be more healthy this year, I have to say, a 30 minute walk every day is a great and easy way to start. Its a beautiful day in Atlanta and I wish I wasn't feeling so gross so I could enjoy it.

What is Boxing Day?

Boxing Day is a public holiday for charitable donation observed Dec. 26th in many countries throughout the world, and that is about the only point anyone can agree on about this holiday. The exact origin of the tradition of giving alms is unknown as is the reasoning behind the term “boxing” in its title. The tradition was popularized during the Victorian era, wherein wealthy land owners would gift money, clothing, or food to their servants or tradesmen for a year of reliable service. The term “boxing” may stem from the collections box in church, which would be filled with donations on Christmas Day and distributed to the needy by the clergy on the following day. Either way, the tradition is about charity.

The modern world still observes the charitable tradition but has also turned Boxing Day into another shopping holiday, kicking off the after Christmas sales with dramatic discounts and doorbuster deals. I usually spend Boxing Day learning how to work the newest electronic gadget my parents bought for each other, so they can enjoy it while I spend the remainder of the day in a food induced coma donated charitably by my grandmother.

The Gift of Choice

Of all the gift fads that come and go, gift cards are here to stay in more ubiquitous and convenient ways than ever. You’ve seen the wall of them in the grocery store no doubt. The volume of places boasting gift cards is impressive, everything from gas stations and amusement parks to the usual suspects like iTunes and Macy’s. If, by chance, you can’t make a choice from the multitude of predetermined cards, universal gift cards are available and can be used anywhere. Retailers market them as “the gift of choice,” a catchall for the hard to shop for, the procrastinators, and the lazy. Why spend money on a gamble when you can give them a gift card and they can get exactly what they want? Some argue the gift card is impersonal, a destroyer of the sacred art of Christmas gift giving, but is the gift card really a gift of choice, or is it a gift of indecision.

Some years you fight the crowds and find the gift. You know beyond a shadow of doubt when you’ve laid hands on it, the one you know they will love and weren’t expecting; the one that will produce a reaction that will live in Christmas video infamy. Some years you comb the malls and the outlet malls and strip malls and come out frazzled and empty handed. Gift cards, like all things, have a time and place and should be used with just as much care and thought as a regular gift. If you’re a book lover like me, a gift card to a book store is right up your alley, and may even be preferable to your family picking books you might like. My mother once bought me a stack of books, all of which I already owned, and she’d thrown away the receipt assuming I would never reject a book. The following year she bought me nothing but gift cards, and while I did get everything I wanted, it wasn’t as fun as ripping open a mystery box and marveling at whatever she thought I wanted. My mother has purchased some tragically awful things for me over the years, and I remember all of them. I can’t recall a single thing I acquired from the years with gift cards.

So yes, gift cards can be impersonal. On the other hand, if not for the gift card, my hermit of a grandfather might have given my sister and me plain white standard sized envelopes stuffed with cash until the day he died. He wasn’t really a hermit, but he wasn’t very good with people, didn’t talk much, and preferred golf and smoking to playing dress up and monsters with his granddaughters. When gift cards came about, he branched out and got us cards to all sorts of places, age appropriate of course. It became a treat to see which gift card our reclusive chain smoking grandfather procured for us. The season pass to Six Flags remains my favorite. So, depending on the person, a gift card might be the coolest gift under the tree.

I think gift cards are appropriate to give to people you don’t know well, or people who enjoy collecting things like books, music, or movies. Playing Secret Santa or White Elephant this year? Drop a restaurant gift card into the mix. A Simon gift card for your shopaholic, a Starbucks card for your caffeine junkie, and a fuel station card for your road weary distance commuter. If you’re going to be indecisive, at least be creative about it.

Suddenly December

I don't know about you, but I always feel like poor Cousin Reginald in the above Norman Rockwell painting during Thanksgiving and Christmas. Simple good intentions transform into a chaotic mess of ill communication and burned pie. On one memorable occasion, the bird scorched and my mother and grandmother hurled blame, insults, and dinner rolls at each other for an hour. I was about nine, my sister seven, and therefore omitted from accountability. It was our job to set the table and entertain ourselves quietly until supper, which meant thieving as much ham as possible pre-dinner without getting caught. Now I'm burdened by the responsibilities of a capable adult.

My family is small, and now that everyone in my age bracket is grown, Thanksgiving ceased to be a three ring circus affair. With only six people in the immediate family in attendance during the college years, Thanksgiving became more like a game show. Post college, my sister and I, insofar, remain childless except for the furry quadruped sort, and live woefully far away from the epicenter of home. Since graduation, I've stopped going home for Thanksgiving opting for a pot luck style meal with school mates who also lack the time off and funds to travel home for the short holiday. You'd like to think, as I did, that being responsible for a vegetable dish and a pie would be easy compared to trolling every aisle in the grocery store gauntlet with a mother who still shops like she's cooking for sixteen.

Mission one: get out of work early and get to the grocery store. Getting there was easy in noonday traffic, weather be damned. Parking wasn't a terrible issue, I'm young and fidgety and don't care about walking a mile from the very back of the parking lot in the freezing rain. Armed with my list, I grabbed a hand basket and raided the produce section. For a bleak moment I worried that I'd waited to long, that somehow the Kroger would be void of sweet potatoes and condensed milk and that I would have to rapidly change meal plans. I was wrong. Kroger had yams to spare and I bought way too many because I love sweet potatoes and they're never as cheap as they are during the holiday season, so naturally I bought eight pounds worth.

The store was filled to the gills and I was glad my list was short and everything fit in the hand basket. I probably spent twenty minutes actually shopping, a record I think given the capacity of the store, only to be thwarted by a possessed self-checkout machine. It insisted squash were apples and eggplant was squash and absolutely lost it when I tried to search for "ginger." I wasn't touching the screen at all, but it kept punching in the letter 'g' repeatedly. Then it decided English wasn't a viable option and switched to Spanish. To top it off the surly man behind me in line kept wishing loudly for me to hurry up, as if I was flopping between the language options for fun. The lady in charge of the self-checkout was having an argument with someone else and unaware of my trouble. I've never had a problem with the self-checkout until then, so I waited until the beast quieted before daring to touch the screen again. After the surly machine let me pay, I had to bag all my items in my cloth bags before the next person could use the machine. The impatient man jumped up before I could finish bagging my things, didn't offer to help me, and couldn't understand why the machine kept telling him to remove items from the bagging area.

I was glad to escape the Kroger, running madly across the parking lot in the rain. The oven was on for the rest of the day drying me off as I juggled roasting and baking various parts of two pies, candied sweet potatoes, and an eggplant and garlic for dip. And then I made too much meringue and accidentally splattered it all over the just washed dishes and myself and the wall and the cabinets and the microwave and other places I might've missed during clean up.

In the middle of my meringue adventure, I got a call. My former roommate, Deb, of three years with whom I'd be spending Thanksgiving, informed me that her mother had fallen off a ladder and broken her leg at the knee. She would make a full recovery but needed surgery, and we'd be spending the holiday in the hospital, and could I pretty, pretty please oversee roasting the turkey when I got to Savannah. I consented and told her she was responsible for paper plates. In the brief moment I spent on the phone, my cat decided to get in the middle of my cooking and stuck his foot in the meringue, freaked out and got it all over himself. I suppose I should feel lucky it wasn't the pumpkin pie I'd just pulled out of the oven, cause that's happened before. On an even more memorable occasion, our family dog got up on the table and licked half the icing off a carrot cake. That dog was a pro at sneaking food during the holidays. I miss her.

So the cat received an impromptu bath in the kitchen sink, because hell if I was going to leave the second pie and the sweet potatoes baking unsupervised. The fun part about baking in my apartment is that the oven is a decrepit tragedy. The insulating rubber sags around the door so you can always smell the gas, and none of the five knobs have even a hint of writing left on them. If not for the thermometer perched on the top rack, I'd have no idea what temperature I was approximately cooking at. If I can get that thermometer to read 400 consistently, its a good day. Baking finished, I prepared everything for the journey down to Savannah.

I unsuccessfully left my house four separate times before realizing I'd forgotten something and going back. After all that I still managed to leave the sweet potatoes in the fridge. Getting out of downtown Atlanta proved a challenge in itself because of the Turkey Day Marathon. All my available routes to the highway were blocked by runners. I arrived in Savannah without incident and helped Deb, Jay, and Lilly roast turkey, and replacement sweet potatoes, which took forever. There's just something about turkey that prevents it from cooking quickly, even small birds. It took five hours for ours to cook through. Jay, who prepped the turkey and took it upon himself to begin roasting it before I turned up, didn't peel all the garlic and onions he stuffed the bird with. It still turned out all right, but he had all our hopes really high with his boasting about garlic and onion infused turkey.

We were starved by the time we turned up at the hospital, six of us crammed into the smallest hospital room imaginable and had Thanksgiving. Six of us, and we still managed to forget the cranberry sauce.

It was awesome, not the craziest by far, but still good.

I hope everyone had a great Turkey day and that you're being safe and not insane out there Christmas shopping. And not to sound the alarm or anything, but tomorrow is Dec. 1st. Snuck up on you, huh? I know I've been staring accusingly at the kittens on my wall calender...

The previous party responsible for the upkeep of this blog wasn't much of a blogger, as evidenced by the lack of readership. None of the blogs I follow constantly push a product. They entertain first and sell second, in most cases, the business part a byproduct of the increasing readership's entertainment. I personally come from a visual story telling background, I have a dual MFA in Animation and the highly refined geek art of Comic books and now I work for Madison at Main, M@M, handling their website upkeep, online marketing, and the occasional print or digital ad.

Not what I envisioned myself doing post-graduation. Not by a long shot.

But I enjoy blogs and blogging, and one of my tasks is to find blogs that M@M can promote itself through. But how can we promote ourselves in the blogging world if we don't also blog? I'm a firm believer in loving what I do and having fun while doing it. I also love research, and now that I work for a rug company, curious me wants to learn more about textiles.
